Clothing and Etiquette Chapter 1
Formal-White Tie
The most formal evening dress code in Western social events, also known as full dress, evening dress, or full evening dress. This attire is typically worn at state banquets, formal dances, and evening weddings.
Men's Attire: Men should wear a black or midnight blue tailcoat with matching trousers, a pure white stiff cotton shirt, a white detachable wing collar, a white bow tie, a white low-cut vest, black silk socks or stockings, and black court shoes.
Women's Attire: Women are expected to wear a floor-length gown (such as a ball gown), which is often required to be white for the most formal debutante balls. For hunter balls, women's dresses must be black, white, silver, or gold.
Semi-formal-Black Tie
This is the most common semi-formal dress code.
Men's Attire: Men should wear a tuxedo with a black satin lapel, a white shirt, a black bow tie, a black cummerbund or waistcoat, black socks, and black shoes.
Women's Attire: Women should wear an evening gown that reaches the ankles or knees, along with a matching clutch and high heels. Jewelry such as necklaces and earrings can be real or imitation, but they should sparkle. Bracelets are preferred over watches.
Cocktail
Cocktail parties are held from 4 pm to 7 pm and fall under the semi-formal dress category.
Men's Attire: Men should wear a dark suit.
Women's Attire: Women should wear a short skirt or suit of the same length as daytime attire but made of more luxurious materials like velvet or silk satin. The colors should be brighter and more opulent than daytime clothing, complemented by sparkling jewelry and possibly a scarf. High heels are a must, and makeup should be more dramatic than during the day.
Business
General business attire falls between formal and informal dress codes. While it allows for some freedom in choice, it is not casual wear.
Men's Attire: Men should wear a dark suit.
Women's Attire: Women should wear a short dress or a well-tailored suit.
